Custom Envelope Cushion

This literally took me 45 minutes from start to finish and is totally a beginners project! So be brave and give it a try. I used a nice weighted fabric and the stag head design was made of black felt. You could choose any design you like (get creative).

What you need

Some nice quality heavy weighted fabric.
Black Felt and black cotton thread.
Cotton thread to match the colour of your fabric.
Sewing chalk
Sewing Machine

Lets get started

So first thing is measuring your form pillow (the inside stuffing of your cushion cover). Mine was 16 inches by 16 inches. You will cut three pieces of fabric now. First is the front piece and should measure the same as your form pillow (16 x 16 inches). Then you need to cut your other two pieces that will act as the envelope across the back of the cushion. These two pieces need to both be 16 x 11 inches. This will create enough overlap to hide your form pillow inside the cushion cover. When they are cut iron them well – this will help a lot when you come to sew.

Now its time to prepare and sew your featured custom design on the front piece of your cushion. Get creative with this….you could use your name, a favourite animal or a symbol (think outside the box). You will draw your design with tailors chalk on the felt and then carefully cut it out. Pin it to your fabric then sew it on.

Ok, now you’re ready to prepare and sew it all together. First it’s important to iron your two smaller pieces with a fold before sewing your straight edge. You will see this so make it nice and straight. then fabric side facing inwards you will pin the edges. Then sew all the way around your cushion with a small seam allowance of half an inch.

After is all sewn, you will need to trim the corners of the fabric (without cutting your stitching). Then turn it the right way around and insert your form pillow. The back show cover it up perfectly.
